SWJA is very proud to congratulate Rich Moss on his promotion to Shichidan, 7th degree black belt, by USA Judo, for his over 40 years of training, competing, coaching and contributing to the great sport of judo.  Rich started judo at the age of 5 under Sensei Willy Cahill, and is the founder and owner of Southwest Judo Academy, Mesa, AZ, where he is partners with Dave Faulkner and Yahya "John" Houssni, and has developed numerous national junior and senior champions.  He shares from his extensive and successful national and international competitive experience and currently serves as the 2015-16 Coach to the USA Judo Junior World Team.

SWJA's Chris Hartman Medals at US Judo Open

Chris Hartman earned a Bronze medal at the 2016 US Judo Open held in Orlando, Florida.  According to Chris, he said,  "I was very surprised at how big this tournament was. I was also very surprised and humbled at the high level skill of the competitors.  Most were folks I have not seen before competing at the USJF/USJA Nationals or Presidents Cup tournaments.  I came back with a renewed purpose to train harder..."  Chris has been successfully busy having tied for Bronze at the 2016 Russian Open Masters in the M3-81kg division, Silver at the 2016 Senior Nationals, also Silver in the 2015 and 2014 US President’s Club Championships, and is currently ranked #1 in the US in the 81kg M5 division (Masters 50-54 years old). Congratulation to Chris for another outstanding performance, his commitment to train harder to improve his judo, and continue to earn the results and recognition he deserves for his effort.

Dave Faulkner Promoted to Shichidan

SWJA congratulates Sensei Dave Faulkner on his promotion by USA Judo to the rank of Shichidan - 7th degree black belt. Sensei's Rich Moss and Dave started Southwest Judo Academy. He stared judo in 1970, at the age of 11, and retired from competition after making the 1993 US World Team.  His many titles, awards and experience include: 3X US Open Judo Champion (1985,1987, 1989), 2X US Olympic Team Alternate (1988, 1992), and 8X US Sr. National place winner, US Olympic Training Center instructor for 8 years.  He is member of USA Judo where he is a certified National Coach and a USA Judo US Coach Clinician.

Yahya "John" Houssni Promoted to Godan

SWJA congratulates Sensei John Houssni on his promotion by USA Judo to the rank of Godan - 5th degree black belt. Sensei John started judo at the age of 7, in Rabat Morocco.  As a junior competitor, he won Gold and numerous places at Morocco Jr. Nationals.  In 1995, he was awarded the "Coupe de Trone Chompion" and invited to compete in the 1998 New York Open.  He was coach of the "Stade Marocain Judo Club for Juniors", was assistant coach (1988-1992), and later coach (1992-1996) of the "Stade Marocain Judo for Seniors", while also being on the Moroccan National Team (1992-1996).  He placed 3rd in the 2014 US Senior Nationals, and was ranked #5 in the US.  He is a partner with Rich Moss and Dave Faulkner at Southwest Judo Academy, a member of USA Judo where he is a certified National Coach and State Referee.
